Ms. Samson’s love of music began early, when a chance encounter with famed cellist Gregor Piatigorsky at a recital left an indelible mark on her. “He signed my program for me, and when he learned I was taking cello lessons, he sketched a quick staff and some notes on it as well.”

Susan Heard recalls attending a performance of Hansel and Gretel with family friends when she was a child, but it was meeting Bruce Heard in 1979 that ignited her ongoing love of classical music and opera. “That changed my life,” she recalls.

Tom Beckmen got involved with the Colburn School at the invitation of then-Board Chairman Carol Colburn Grigor. “We both served on the board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and she asked me to come over and help out at Colburn,” he recalls.
